What is Discipleship?

When we personally respond to God's salvation plan, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit who helps us to grow into strong disciples of Jesus Christ.

Discipleship is the process of being changed into the likeness of Jesus Christ, so that we think like Him, speak like Him and act like Him and it is an ongoing, daily process.

This passage in the Bible gives us an insight into three dimensions in which we are to grow and be equipped as disciples:

'So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the

fullness of Christ.'   (Ephesians 4:11-13)

AN UPWARD DIMENSION

'….so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God....'

This dimension is about continually growing in our relationship with God, increasing our knowledge of Him as our Father and learning about his love and nature through our revelation and experience of Him. It's about understanding the Lordship of His Son, Jesus Christ, the work that He has done, is doing and will do to save us and establish His Kingdom. And, it's about knowing the power and purpose of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives.  As we grow in this dimension, our love for God deepens and the expression of our love through worship expands.

AN INWARD DIMENSION

'….and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.'

This dimension is about developing and maturing our character so that we are filled with the nature and character of Christ, becoming like Him in our lives.  This is a process of getting rid of attitudes and behaviours that we have developed through living in a sinful world and aligning our lives with God's character and ways as revealed in His Word, the Bible. As we develop this inward dimension of our character, our attitudes and behaviours are transformed and we experience healing, restoration and wholeness.

AN OUTWARD DIMENSION

'….to equip his people for works of service...'

God is on a mission to make known the wonderful news of the work that His Son, Jesus Christ,  has done for humanity and to invite people to personally respond to His gift of salvation and reconciliation. His mission is to make known His gift of salvation to every person on the earth and his strategy to achieve this is to send us out by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit as witnesses to the people around us. As we grow in this dimension, we are equipped with an understanding of Father God's heart for the lost, we learn how God has uniquely shaped and gifted us,  we understand His missional plans and our unique part in them and we see the people around us as the people that He wants to connect with through us to reveal His love and gift of salvation.

A shape that is solid is called a 3D shape and, as we grow in these 3 Dimensions, we become solid, 3D, disciples of Jesus Christ.  Find out how to grow in these dimensions here.
