The gift of the Holy Spirit

When we personally receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we receive the gift of His Spirit, the Holy Spirit.  This is the Spirit of the Lord, God Himself, who comes into our hearts to live and work and make Himself known to us.

The Bible tells us this in the book of Acts chapter 2 verse 38:

'Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'

WHAT DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT DO?

When we respond to God's gift of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ, His Holy Spirit comes to live and work in our hearts.  One of the reasons that He is given to us is to personally reveal God to us.

Jesus said: ‘I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. He is the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God. The world cannot receive him, because it cannot see him or know him. But you know him, because he remains with you and is in you.’ (John 14:16-17 )

Through the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, God becomes real to us. Because Jesus has been raised from the dead and is alive, we experience His life through His Spirit. We experience His love for us personally, and day by day we learn more about the nature of God as we are helped by the Holy Spirit to grow in our revelation and experience of Him. The Holy Spirit helps us to build a strong relationship with our Heavenly Father God.

Another reason that the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives is to grow us into strong disciples of Jesus Christ. Discipleship is the process of being changed into the likeness of Christ so that we think like Him, speak like Him and act like Him.

'For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.'  (Romans 8:29)

As we listen to and obey the Holy Spirit, we will learn to do the things that are right according to God's ways on a daily basis and become strong disciples as we are progressively changed into the likeness of Christ.
